Reds are "red-hot"

Redfish are "red-hot" right now and should only be getting better over the next few weeks in the SC Lowcountry right now. Not sure how to fish for them? Here are the basics. First of all, know the law, the keeper slot for Redfish is is 15-23." Bag limit is two fish per angler and the vessel limit is no more than 6 fish per boat.

There are two strategies: Big Reds in the channel, and Slot Reds in the shallow waters. Let's talk about both of them.

First, Big Reds. Good Lord. This is how I've made my mark in the fishing community and I've and been doing it since the 1960's. It has not changed much since then and remains very consistent, especially this time of year. Big Reds like deep water (18-24ft) along the EDGE of the channel. I call it the "grillage." this is the edge of the main water, the side of the channel. It's where they cruise up the ridge. It's the drop off on the side of the river. Tide is the key. They like water that's moving, but not moving too fast. They really like what I call the "incoming-outgoing" tide. That's when the slack water starts moving. I've found them in closer at high tide and further out at low tide. Bait is very important. Blue crabs are far and away the most effective bait for many reasons. One reason is because you don't get bothered by sharks and sting rays as much. The second reason is because blue crabs have an amazing scent, which is the most effective attractant of all for Big Reds.
